The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has assured candidates who sat for the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) that their results will be released on or before Thursday, August 4.
Coming amid social media rumours alleging a nationwide cancellation of the examination, the assurance of releasing results soon brings relief to about two million candidates across Nigeria awaiting their results for admission into tertiary institutions and other academic pursuits.
Over 1.9 million candidates from 23,554 schools across Nigeria registered to sit the WASSCE, which held from 24 April to 20 June.
WAEC debunks cancellation rumours
In a statement issued on Sunday by the Acting Head of Public Affairs, WAEC, Moyosola Adesina described the alleged cancellation as false and mischievous.
She said, “The attention of WAEC Nigeria has been drawn to a press statement alleging the cancellation of all the papers written during the just concluded WASSCE for School Candidates, 2025.
“The spurious press statement being circulated did not emanate from the Council. The said examination has not been cancelled.”
According to the council, the press statement dated 19 July, being circulated on social media platforms, which alleged that the Federal Ministry of Education in collaboration with WAEC had cancelled the examination due to widespread malpractice, coordinated leakage of question papers, and unauthorised digital dissemination of exam materials, was baseless.
“The WAEC management would like to state unequivocally that the spurious press statement being circulated did not emanate from the council. The said examination has not been cancelled. Though the source of that information cannot be ascertained, the council is certain that the false claim is being peddled by mischief-makers who are bent on bringing the council to disrepute to cause confusion and panic among candidates who sat the examination,” the statement reads.
It would be recalled that chaos erupted across several examination centres in Nigeria on 28 May when candidates sitting the English Language paper in the WASSCE were subjected to long, unexpected delays that dragged into the late-night hours, forcing candidates to use torchlights to illuminate dark classrooms.
The disruption, which reportedly stemmed from a leak of the English Language paper, prompted WAEC to cancel the original questions at the last minute and arrange for a replacement, triggered outrage among parents, educators, and other stakeholders, with the social media awash with claims of malpractice and institutional failure.

Results ready soon
Amid rumours of a cancellation, the Council disclosed that marking of examination scripts has been concluded.
“As a matter of fact, the marking of scripts for the said examination has just been concluded and results will be released on or before Thursday, August 4,” it said.
Public advised to rely on official channels
The examination body urged the public to disregard the fake publication and always verify information through WAEC’s official channels.
“All information from the council are disseminated via our official and verified social media handles, as well as accredited media platforms across the country,” the statement added.
The council also clarified that all press releases are issued and signed by the Public Affairs Department on behalf of the Head of National Office.
“We therefore urge our stakeholders and the general public to disregard the said publication.”
