A medical student of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Oreoluwa Adewole, has died during a clinical examination, the university has said.
The institution disclosed this in a statement issued by its Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olarewaju, on Thursday.
According to the statement, Oreoluwa, a 400 level student in the College of Health Sciences, reportedly complained of chest pain during a clinical viva examination before the incident occurred on Wednesday.
Emergency response fails to save student
The statement explained that Oreoluwa was immediately attended to by lecturers and fellow medical students present at the examination venue.
It noted that despite prompt medical attention and efforts to revive him, he was pronounced dead.
The university described the incident as tragic, noting that it had sent shockwaves across the campus community.
University reacts
The Vice Chancellor, Adebayo Bamire, a professor, expressed condolences to the family of the deceased on behalf of the university’s Governing Council, Senate, staff and students.
He also sympathised with the student’s colleagues and members of the College of Health Sciences.
The university said it is engaging relevant authorities and the family to provide support and to better understand the circumstances surrounding the incident.
