The Lagos State Government has partnered with telecommunications company MTN Nigeria to redevelop the Obalende under-bridge into a modern, regulated transport hub aimed at improving mobility, sanitation and security in the area.
The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed this on Tuesday 27 January, via his verified X (formerly Twitter) handle @tokunbo_wahab, noting that the facility will be known as the Y’ELLO Bus Park upon completion.
Previous post by the commissioner states that the government has commenced clearance operation including removal of shanties and illegal structures under the bridge and environ.
From degraded space to organised transit hub
Mr Wahab said the redevelopment will convert what was previously a degraded and notorious space into a functional, secure and community-focused transport facility.
According to him, the new bus park will feature a properly organised and regulated transport terminal, a recycling drop-off station, and a road camp for sweepers of the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), alongside security agencies.
The facility will also include over 60 public toilet fixtures, kiosks and other essential amenities designed to serve commuters and residents in the Obalende axis.
Sustainability, safety and climate focus
Mr Wahab explained that a bio-digester system is being introduced to sustainably manage wastewater generated within the park, while a dedicated recycling station will help discourage illegal waste disposal in the area.
He added that the design prioritises safety, health and aesthetics, with solar-powered lighting installed to improve night-time visibility, eliminate blind spots and enhance the effectiveness of closed-circuit television (CCTV) surveillance.
“In line with our commitment to climate responsibility, the project includes the installation of solar panels to support long-term energy efficiency and reduce our carbon footprint,” he said.
Mr Wahab also disclosed that tree planting forms part of the project to improve air quality and enhance the visual appeal of the environment.
“This project reflects our resolve to reclaim public spaces, make them functional, sustainable and safe, and ensure they serve the needs of Lagosians in a modern and responsible way,” he added.

The announcement of the Y’ELLO Bus Park has sparked conversation online, with Lagos residents sharing their support and concerns about the project. While some praised the initiative, others questioned how it will affect existing commuters and informal transport operators in the area.
