A DevReporting Editorial Advisor and Co-founder of Women Radio 91.7fm, Toun Sonaiya, has been appointed as the Board Chair of St Ives Communications Ltd, owners of Women Radio.
In a statement by the organisation’s Board of Directors, Aramide Alakija-Ajeh was also named the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Women Radio, effective immediately.
According to the board of directors, the appointments align with the organisation’s governance standards and advances its strategic objectives.
Congratulating Mrs Sonaiya, the board noted that she has been pivotal in driving the Women Radio’s growth and affirming its position as a leading and trusted voice for women and communities since its establishment in 2015.
Continued leadership
Prior to her appointment, Mrs Sonaiya was also the leader of the Voice of Women Empowerment Foundation (VOWEF), a position she will continue to occupy to facilitate a mutually beneficial collaboration between the Foundation and Women Radio.
The development is a testament to the trust in her leadership acumen and growth that can be brought to the organisation.
“Sonaiya will continue to lead the Voice of Women Empowerment Foundation (VOWEF), driving synergy between the Foundation and Women Radio WFM 91.7 in advancing advocacy and social impact initiatives,” the statement read.
Alakija-Ajeh as new CEO
After a decade of operation under the leadership of Mrs Sonaiya, Mrs Alakija-Ajeh has taken up the role of the Chief Executive Officer. She has a wealth of experience and track record in strategic growth-oriented leadership, organisational development, innovation and operational excellence.
“The board is confident that her leadership will provide continuity, reinforce stability and drive sustained progress for the station,” the board said.

With a view to amplifying the voices of women across Nigeria, Babatubde Okewale, a medical doctor, and Mrs Toun Okewale Sonaiya, a veteran broadcast journalist, conceived of the Women Radio initiative in 2015, and since its first transmission, it has maintained the front seat as the first gender-specific radio station in Sub-Sahara Africa.
As a gender-based station, it is oriented to promote economy, governance, sports, and health, among others, in women’s perspectives. Operated by St Ives Communications Ltd, its launching in December 2015 had prominent Nigerians such as Aisha Buhari, Funmi Alakija, Dele Momodu, among many others, in attendance.
